Our Mission
Nupur Folk Dance Academy, founded in September 1999 by Nirmal Gosavi, is one of the leading folk dance institutes in the Bay Area, California. The academy is dedicated to preserving and presenting the diverse folk dance traditions of India, celebrating the country’s rich cultural heritage.
India’s cultural landscape varies greatly from state to state, and these differences are beautifully expressed through vibrant folk dances filled with rhythm, joy, and spontaneity. The academy’s students have learned and performed dances from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kashmir, Punjab, and more. They also explore cultural themes such as Festivals of India and Weddings of India, deepening their understanding of traditional heritage.
Beyond performance, the academy believes folk dance is a powerful way to build teamwork, collaboration, and community. Through shared practice and stage experiences, students not only celebrate culture but also strengthen bonds and grow together.

Rooted in Tradition
Every dance form is taught with respect for its cultural origins. We study the history, music, and meaning behind the movements — not just the steps. Students learn context alongside technique.

Our structured levels allow each student to grow at their own pace. No auditions, no prerequisites. We adapt our teaching to individual needs and welcome dancers of all body types, abilities, and backgrounds.
Performance-Ready
Stagecraft is woven into our curriculum. From the first term, students build confidence through in-class showcases, building toward community performances and festival appearances.
