Nupur Folk Dance Academy was established in September 1999 by Nirmal Gosavi and has since been one of the leading folk dance institutes in the Bay Area, California. The Academy works to preserve and present folk dance traditions of India. India is a large country with a very rich culture and tradition, which varies from state to state. Many of these traditions are embodied by unique folk dances where joy is freely expressed with rhythm and spontaneity.
The Artistic Director, Nirmal Gosavi started learning dance at the age of eight in Mumbai, India. She has learnt Bharatnatyam and has also completed formal training in folk dance under the guidance of Guru Ramesh Purav, and Guru Acharya Parvati Kumar. Over the years, Nirmal has performed in several productions including TV shows and professional stage shows. One of her popular characters is "Durga" and "Gauri", which were the lead roles in the Marathi dance drama "Durga Jhali Gauri". This production has been the most popular Marathi musical dance drama on the stage for past 25 years and has been running successfully even today.
As an alumni of Nupur Folk Dance Academy- I can honestly say that being a part of this team, or rather, family was a life changing experience. When I joined in middle school, I had never taken any form of Indian Dance before- Nirmal Aunty changed my fear of it to a love so deep that I continued to dance through college. I made some of my closest friends (with whom I am still close with today) through this class and developed many memories during my years here. I came back as an alumni to coach the younger girls on several occasions and loved watching the growth of the academy. Nirmal Aunty is a brilliant choreographer, mentor and teacher, and I am forever thankful for the experiences I had as a student and dancer under her guidance.
I have been with Nupur Folk Dance for many wonderful years. I love the class and studio environment. Each dancer is treated with respect and is taught to love not only dance but herself. The dancers take care of each other. One of my favorite memories will always be the time when we all are backstage during Dress rehearsal. We all line up buttoning each other’s costume and fixing each other’s headpieces. We all had each other. Nirmal is like a family has been so good to us over the years encouraging all and fostering her love of dance
Nupur Folk Dance Academy has taught me and my daughter, Karishma, music, rhythm and beat! Nirmal Gosavi has been a great influence in our lives. She has helped us learn not only different styles of Indian folk dance, but also has been a friend, mentor and a great dance teacher. We have been students of the Nupur Folk Dance Academy for the past 15 years and have learnt many skills, especially team work and presentation of graceful dances on stage.
For the last fifteen years I have been thankful to be a part of the Nupur Folk Dance Academy family. Growing up dancing with Nirmal Aunty was one of the best experiences I could ask for. Each year was filled with new routines, dances from different regions of India, some that I had never heard of before, and being part of an amazing team. The environment at Nupur Folk Dance fosters friendship, creativity and collaboration, making it a great place for young dancers. With her creativity and dedicated team, Aunty has become the creator of many amazing productions! I am extremely proud to be part of this family.
I was Introduced to Nirmal in 2001 and I joined the dance class for ladies. The joy and energy she brought to the class was so infectious that we all just got into it. It gave me back my joy for dancing, great exercise and lifelong friends.
Folk- n- Fit is a beautiful combination of the lovely folk dances from all parts of India, lilting music, graceful dancing, cardio work out and just sheer fun! The instructors walk you through the various steps, patiently and nicely, so that even a newbie like me can join in effortlessly. I enjoy my hour of Folk-n- Fit a lot!
Nirmal’s Folk-n- fit class combines the perfect mix of exercise with vibrant dance routines honoring specific festivals and various regions of India, including Goa, Gujarat, Assam, Punjab and Kerala. I attend the Sunday morning class, and do not like to miss a single session. Nirmal’s choreography ensures complete workouts with stretches, aerobics and cool downs, all done to beautiful music, personalized instruction, and graceful moves. You can’t ask for more.
